Got goals?

It's getting to the end of the year and the beginning of the next...so it's time for new year goals. I've actually never sat down and wrote out a list with the title "new year resolutions" per se, but I kinda want to this year. I have a few ideas, but not a lot. I was wondering if you guys did resolutions and what kind of things you do.

Yum Vs. Mush...

No offence to any of you who actually like oatmeal the normal way, but me personally...I have a weird emotion to Mush's texture. If any of you have seen, "Little House on the Prairie" I feel the same way Albert does on the episode "Winoka Warriors" ( I think it's that one)...ok anyway I'm rabbit trailing. Mom made this really good baked oatmeal and I'd thought I'd share it with you...so here you go.

Yum Vs. Mush- and Yum wins by a mile as Mush lags behind in it's mushyness.

---Yum's secret to it's powers---
3 cups quick cooking oats (we used regular rolled oats and they worked fine)
¾ cup sugar (we used Sucre de canne naturel (a.k.a sucanat)...and it turned out great!)
1 cup milk
⅓ cup melted butter
2 eggs
2 tsp baking powder
¾ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla extract

Preheat oven to 350° F. Combine all ingredients in mixing bowl and mix well. Spread batter into a greased 9 x 13 pan and bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.

Variations: Add 1 cup of chopped apples or other fruits or nuts. This is really good with a little milk poured over the top. You can also add additional toppings after baking as well. Do with as you please! :)


This beats regular oatmeal any day...as I'm sure that I'm lamented.

p.s. and no I don't call it "sucre de canne naturel"...I call it sucanat..I was just being mysterious...don't hold it against me. :)

We just finished watching the movie "Food inc." Whoever of you have not seem it....you should. There is some reference to evolution...but all in all it's good. It really makes you think about what you eat and how the government is so controlling. After watching this movie, great conversations emerge. :)

“They forced my hands under my knees and tied them there. Then they put a stick through these ropes and hung me upside down. They filled my mouth with dirty rags. I almost suffocated. They beat me, breaking my bones. Great pieces of skin hung from my body.

“Then they freed me from bonds and forced me to run with bleeding feet over a path with sharp stones.

“Next, they put me in a small cell containing 62 people. There was only room to stand. Stand on what? On bleeding feet, on broken bones. The cell was completely dark and there was no air. Don’t ask how prisoners fulfilled their bodily needs. There was only one hole serving as a toilet, but no one could get to it.

“All had to stand pressed against each other to give a few the opportunity to sleep a bit lying on one side. Because of the limited space, no turning was possible.”

Her cuts bled, but there was no medicine. Tsehay could not even hold a cup, so others had to help her drink.

Tsehay Tolessa was tortured by the Ethiopian Communist for her faith in Jesus Christ. She of stayed in that cell for over a year, spending a total of ten years in jail. As a result of spending such a long time in darkness, she had not regained full vision.

As they tortured her, the Ethiopian Communist mocked: “Where is your loving Jesus?”

But Tsehay only pitied the blindness of her tortures. She knew the Lord was always with her, alive in her heart. “Jesus was there, in the midst of human waste, in the humiliation, in the blood and stench. He is more than a King ruling in heaven, a Bridegroom. He is the One tortured in prison.”

How would you take this torture? Could you persevere until death? If you would ask most people if they would deny God, they would probably be shocked and say, “Of course I wouldn’t!” But really think about it. It takes a lot faith and stamina to die a martyr’s death. My friends, this is true faith that only comes by an unconditional faith in God. Think about Peter. Both of them ate with, fellowshipped, and were in the presence of Jesus on a daily basis. When they had the Passover together Peter told Jesus that he would never deny him. Still Peter denied him three times, just to save his skin.

The Fruit of Her Hands

“Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.”

Is there anything so delightful as receiving a gift that is handmade? Before there were store bought socks, there were those that Grandma made, before there were store bought quilts, there were ladies that had painstakingly stitched every quilt square for that special someone’s wedding. Times have changed, but there is still nothing so dear as a lovely homemade treasure. Whether it is a freshly baked pie out of the oven, a handmade quilt, or even a hand stitched pillow case, nothing can compare with the tender love and care that goes into a special gift made with your own hands.

“She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight.” -Proverbs 31:13

“…So train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.” -Titus 2:4-5

The Bible speaks of women working with their hands, so it must be of importance and it must render something inspiring to the feminine being….don’t you think?
Manufactured goods can never replace a special gift that is made by a beloved mother, sister or aunt, who has lovingly made it with her own hands. When Laura receives a treasured gift, it will be twice as dear if grandma made it. Special heirlooms might include a handmade cookbook, quilt, garment, apron, recipes, hand written letters, words of wisdom, garden tips, cleaning tips… which can all be passed down to future generations who will treasure them, Lord willing, for years to come.
These lost arts can all be learned. For those of you who are eager to learn some of these skills, you might seek out a noble woman in your church or community who could be a mentor to you. For those of you who are skilled in some of these arts, I would encourage you to look for teaching opportunities. I have fond memories of my first knitting lesson with an elderly godly lady from our church who graciously taught me the basics of knitting, over a hot cup of tea. These Titus 2 moments will forever be engraved in my heart.
So what is that special treasure that can be made with your own hands and offered to your dear family in love? May we be remembered as women who loved Christ, served others, and worked willingly with our hands.
